Yahoo! Search Result Abuse

Our unfriendly neighborhood drug spammers have moved onto something new, they are now abusing Yahoo!‘s search result URL’s. Lets have a look at how Yahoo! search results are shown.

When you do a search in Yahoo! each result displays with a tracking URL to track a users clicks on links to try and improve the relevance of search results this URL is effectively is a redirect URL. Now while you might think this is helpful and to an extent it is, it also causes a problem especially if the referral is not checked against a site.

I have received the following URL in a spam email:

http://wrs.search.yahoo.co.jp/S=2114736003/K=holesteam.com/v=2/SID=w/TID=jp0006_jp0006/l=WS1/R=1/DUI=1/QT=dqp/IPC=jp/H=0/;_ylt=A3xThlIPO5JHaQoBWT.DTwx.;_ylu=X3oDMTFqbm9mZWNuBGNvbG8DdwRsA1dTMQRwb3MDMQRxdANkcXAEc2VjA3NyBHZ0aWQDanAwMDA2X2pwMDAwNg--/SIG=119esggd9/EXP=1200852111/*-http%3A//holesteam.com/

The above URL is the top result for a search on holesteam.com, this domain is the spammers domain.

Real Alternative 1.75 MSI Installer

So I wanted to deploy Real Alternative 1.75 on my network at work, but low and behold I can’t find a pre-made MSI file that anyone has produced (and publicly shared). So I decided to make one myself.

And unlike all those other snobs I’m going to share it with you all.

Downloads

Notes:

  • This is a full install based on the Real Alternative 1.75 setup
  • It installs Menu Shortcuts in Accessories\Entertainment\Real Alternative
  • “Uninstall Real Alternative” has been removed from the menu shortcuts

Build Process
Download a copy of Real Alternative from Codec Guide. I’m going to make this short and simple. Basically I’ve built a fresh install on Windows XP in Virtual PC, ran Windows Update so that Windows was current, installed WinINSTALL LE 2003 and then Ran through the WinINSTALL process to create an MSI.

Note: When installing WinINSTALL LE 2003 disable your network adapter, this will get you past the registration error.

Lots of new phrases today, it’s almost like they don’t learn. Although I can say that the inurl phrases are very effective at limiting results.

Sun Microsystems Buys MySQL

Ok so I was reading on ZDNet that Sun Microsystems is purchasing MySQL for US$1billion. Now I don’t mean to raise alarm bells but what is this going to mean for those us who are using MySQL. Is Sun going to push MySQL to a commercial product, or are they going to just add stuff on and sell that. Who knows what their plan is, interestingly they have said nothing about this, at present it’s all guff in media about the purchase and no detail, and as usual the devil is in the detail.

As usual when something that lots of people love and use gets into big business hands we will all be watching.

Google Abuse Update

Four more phrases for “I’m Feeling Lucky” abuse have been seen today using a mixture of methods previously discussed.

It can be most annoying sometimes when you try to access files across Windows Shares on a network and come accross an access denied message. The aim of this little function is to allow you to clear saved Network Share passwords from a windows computer.

Go into the start menu, and select Run. Copy and paste
rundll32.exe keymgr.dll, KRShowKeyMgr
into the dialog box and click OK.

You will now have access to Stored User Names and Passwords window. AKA – Key Manager
