Canon CanoScan LiDE 50 x64 Drivers

I don’t know who made these but they work, whoever you are I salute you. Since Canon are tools & wont make the drivers for the Canon LiDE 50 scanner for 64bit Windows, someone hacked them together from drivers of another (LiDE 60) Canon scanner.

Device support for this scanner is not included within Microsoft XP/Vista/Windows 7 x64 or provided as an installable driver by Canon. To resolve this lack of support please install the modified driver below.

This package is based on original Canon ScanGear driver for the LiDE 60 and includes the full ScanGear GUI TWAIN interface required to operate the scanner.

Modifications for the LiDE 50 include:

  • Insertion of Hardware ID
  • Insertion of Device ID
  • Replacement of LiDE 60 Colour Profile with correct LiDE 50 ICC file
  • Insertion of correct flatbed scan area dimensions and imaging capabilities

Installation instructions

Extract the files from the archive to a folder.

If you have not yet plugged the Scanner in then when you plug the scanner in Windows will ask you for the location of the drivers, however if you have already plugged in and cancelled this request then you will need to follow the next steps:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Scroll through the list and look for other devices
  3. Expand the other devices group, you will find a device with a yellow exclamation mark on it
  4. Right click on the device
  5. Click Browse my computer for driver software
  6. Click on browse and then navigate to the folder you extract the files to on your Desktop (I.e. the extracted ZIP file) then click next (check Include subfolders if it is not selected)
  7. If Windows thinks the driver in the folder is a match for the device you selected, it will install it.
  8. Once the Wizard finishes successfully, Reboot to allow driver installation to complete

If the installation Wizard was not successful then this driver is not going to work, this usually means you are trying to install the wrong hardware or have a version of Windows that this does not work with.

    Thank you very much!! Just unzipped the dricver infto my downlaods folder. Then plugged in the scanner and Win7 automatically found it and installed it. Cool! Yeah!!

    ALL GOOD up and Running again … on X64 Vista
    tried all Canon 60 -70 -90 driver no sucess…
    THIS ONES WORKS with Toolbox 4.1

    This package indeed comes from DNA(donotargue.com) it was made by a friend of mine(used to be admin on the site) as he had problems getting them to work on vista.

    Hey folks!

    I love all the feedback regarding this driver! However, is there a specific order in which to install this driver set?

    I ran both Setup and Launcher, plugged in the scanner and Windows 7 x64 saw it just great! Scanner even made it’s normal little chirpyderp! BUT, scanner is not recognized by anything. And when I go to use the scanner using default windows context, it gives me a WIA error. And all other apps are telling me that no scanner was found.

    Anyone have this issue?

    Couldn’t get the driver to install on Windows 7 64-bit Uttimate. After launching Setup the OS simply return w/o any indication of the installed application/driver. I tried it after a clean reboot and run as Administrator. Not sure what I’m doing wrong here. Did anyone have this issue? Resolution? Thanks!

    I truefully appreciate all the smart people taking their time to research and found the solution to this driver problem. I blame Canon for out of greed by not supporting their own customers but leave them out in the cold. I experienced the same problem as yours after installing the DNA driver, the Cannon Toolbox could not find my scanner, but from another post I read I got my Lide50 to work. To start you have to uninstall the DNA driver, download the Lide60 64 bit driver (lide60vst6411111a_64en) from the official Canon website, do not run the set up but unzip it with 7z, you now have a cabinet file, unzip with 7z again then you can install the driver from there. Restart the comp and the scanner will be recognized by Toolbox as Lide60. The only thing is the buttons on the scanner will not work, you’ll have to scan and print from Toolbox. I hope this help.

    Windows 7 64

    Have tried both the lide 50 modified and trying to install only driver from canon lide 60.

    the first shows canon lide 20 in devices and printers but there is no recognition by the scanner with no familiar whirr. Will not work with canoscan or with twain acquire, does not recognize scanner.

    any ideas?

    I’m running into the same Windows Ultimate issue (x64) – everything goes according to plan until ready to scan – then I get an error Unable to select Twain sourc\ even though I just selected it from a pop-up. Also Toolbox 4.9 doesn’t have anything in it’s Settings select scanner dropdown box. Any ideas?

    cant get it to work 🙁

    have tried both original driver from canon for the 60 model
    and the modified 50 driver from DNA

    unpacked the lots in two directories with 7Z (why oh why yet another packer… was just zip not good enough?)

    both tried auto-install (by plugging in the scanner and have windows search itself) then de-install, run setupsg and then plugin, have hardware wizard look for the driver, but it’s not hooking up – in the hardware menu the scanner is mentioned but as faulty driver.

    i can’t get the installer to run. using windows 7 x64 (just like old windows, except it makes you even stupider!) and i hit setupsg.exe and run as an administrator. nothing happens, and when i use the “troubleshoot compatibility” thing, it says the program is an “incompatible application”. if i have task manager open i see setupsg.exe open for about half a second before disappearing. by the way, what’s with all this 9/11 fake computer security fnord crap? every time i run an exe i have to reassure my pc that i really wanted to do that. i loathe windows. why haven’t i made the switch yet? i love penguins. /rant

    Shame on the multinational corporations of Microsoft and Canon who should be spending some of their immense profits on their customers.
    I had to manually add the driver, but, hey, what a pleasant sound when the scanner woke up as the driver was accepted. Thanks again

    I have done what you explain and when I plug the scanner it sounds as it works but when I try to use Digitalization utility or Scann using Paint, both don´t find the scanner. What should I do?. I have no money to buy another scanner.

    Hi there. Thanks for the driver. I have installed it and get the message “device working properly”. I have done “Test Scanner or camera” from Start/Devices and Printers and get the message “Your imaging device successfully completed the diagnostic test” and the status in the property dialogue box is “device ready”. However, if I right click on the scanner in Start/Devices and click on “start scan” I get the message “You need a WIA driver to use this device. Please install it from the installation CD or the manufacturer’s web site and try again”

    I have toolbox 4.9.3.2 which may have been installed when I was trying to get the LiDE 50 to run as an LiDE 60. I’m having a similar problem as Barry (December 15, 2010) in that I can’t select source in the toolbox setting. If I try to scan from the toolbox, I get a dialogue box headed “Select Source” message with the following (and only) source highlighted: CanaScan LiDE 50 11.1 (32-32). If I hit the select button, I get the message “Unable to select TWAIN source”.

    If I try manually running Launch.exe I and go through troubleshooting, I get the message under issues found “incompatible application”

    I feel as if I’m 90% there but I really need help to actually get the scanner operating

    Thanks very much. Had to download the Canoscan Toolbox software (available on Canon’s website:http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Consumer_Products/products/scanners/LiDE_series/CanoScan_LiDE_50.aspx?type=download&page=1) for the scanner to work after installing the driver, and once I had done this it worked fine on my Lide50. The “scan” button on the scanner doesn’t work but it’s very simple to launch the Toolbox software on your PC and start the scanner from there.

    I’m trying to update the package to support the following models:
    CanoScan LiDE 20/N670U/N676U
    CanoScan LiDE 30/N1240U
    CanoScan LiDE 50

    There are some things that need to be known said about running this on a x64 system. You need to boot your system with F8 -> disable driver signature enforcement each and every time you (re)boot your system. If you fail to do so you will not be able to use the drivers due to the way 64Bit system handles “unsigned/modified/NO WHQL certificate” drivers.

    I plugged in my scanner, used the device manager to select and install the driver as specified on this page and all looked as though it was going to work properly but it will not scan. When I try to open the scanner, I get an error about needing a WIA driver. Does anyone have any solutions to this before I go buy a new scanner?

      I found a web page where a gentleman was having the same problem with the WIA message. (keep in mind that I just got a new computer using Windows 7 64 bit, and am wanting my Canon LiDE 50 scanner to work). After loading the driver software shown above, and trying the latest canoScan software, the WIA message would come up. Another website stated that if one uses an older version of CanoScan, then it would end the WIA message and the scanner would work. The version of CanoScan was 4.1.3.6. I downloaded it and installed, and it worked. I used this site to get it from:

    Jon, In reading the string apparently you were successful in getting the LiDE50 scanner to work on Win7 64b. I’ve got an older LiDE20 that was working right up until I replaced XP with Win7 64b. This is the ONLY device I’ve not found a suitable replacement driver/workaround for. I did see one reference in the string to beta on a LiDE20, but the link was broken. Did you ever have any success in working out a driver for the LiDE20? Thank you in advance for your response, and the great work helping out the other users of the LiDE50.

    I have been able to confirm that this file works in Windows 8 as well.

    All you have to do is Shift+Restart, do Advanced Startup, and do Option 7 startup without driver signing.

    Was able to complete installation and Use my Old Canon Lide 50 with Windows 8 Pro.

        My question is – when I next shut down and then do a normal start up – will my computer start ‘with’ or ‘without’ driver signing?

    For everyone that has tried to use the DNA driver to get their LiDE 50 scanner working again, only to get the “Unable to select TWAIN source”, error in the CanoScan Toolbox, I have a solution.

    Follow AgntLgn’s advice above to install the driver. You will need to turn driver signing off for the driver to install as he has suggested.

    Make sure that once you’ve installed the driver and plugged in your scanner, you are able to see the LiDE 50 scanner in the Device Manager under Imaging Devices.

    Then, rather than trying to use the CanoScan Toolbox to use the scanner, go to http://www.irfanview.com/ and download the program InfranView, which is a free image manipulation program which also supports scanners. Install the program and then you can scan by going File -> Acquire. Click “Select TWAIN Source” and select your LiDE 50 scanner, then lo and behold – you can scan images again!

    The fact that using a different program to do the scanning does work indicates that there is a problem with the CanoScan Toolbox rather than the drivers provided by DNA.

    This was the only way I was able to get my Canon LiDE 50 scanner to work on Windows 8 Professional. Hopefully this is helpful to others too.

    After installing Windows 8, I couldn’t get the LIDE50 to work and the machine was just about going to landfill when I got to here.

    Worked perfectly for me.

    1. Follow AgntLgn instruction on option 7 restart
    2. Use older version CanoScan toolbox per Bob Hitt

    Recently my canon Lide50 stopped working after I upgraded from Windows 8.0 to 8.1. I have to repeat the process to have the driver reinstalled.

    Also I spent a bit of time trying to restart the computer advanced options. However, it wont. I discovered that my laptop would refuse to restart as I have it connected to an external monitor with the lid closed. Maybe it is sensing this and went straight to power off. Took me a while to work it out…. but happy in the end!

    Trying to team a LIDE 50 with my computer running under Win 8.1 64-bit, I feel the need to echo a rather plaintive call for help made by Kevin almost exactly two years ago:

    Can someone tell me what I need to do from the beginning??

    This is exactly my situation! I’ve downloaded the Canon Toolbox version recommended by Bob Hitt, and that installed without difficulty. But I’m having trouble with unzipping the driver file; when I right-click to open with 7Zip, a Dos-type window opens and closes in a flash, so that I can’t read the message on it. Even if I could, I’m not at all sure that I could pick my way through the steps to get this working.

    I need a step-by-step idiot’s guide that even my ageing brain can follow. Can some kind soul oblige?

    OK, this is where I am.

    1. I’ve downloaded Canon toolbox v,4.1.3.6 as recommended above by Bob Hitt on September 10, 2012. This installed in the default folder: ProgramFiles(x86)/Canon and contains 23 files.

    2. I’ve downloaded the zipped Lide 50 driver into my Downloads folder, then moved it from there into a new folder named Canon Lide driver I’d created for it in Documents/Temp.

    3. I then tried to restart the computer in advanced start up by using Shift + Restart as recommended above (January 29. 2013, January 23 and February 4, 2014) but couldn’t get into Advanced Start this way. A web search produced some alternative approaches (http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/a/open-advanced-startup-options-windows-8.htm) and the second one on that page seemed to work for me.

    4. I then unzipped the driver download in the same location, producing 9 items.

    5. I read the Readme file, then right-clicked on SETUPSG.exe and clicked on Run as administrator.

    6. This opened a UAC window asking me if I wanted the program, described as ‘Canon.IJ.Installer’ to make changes to my computer.

    7. When I clicked Yes the UAC window closed, but nothing else seemed to happen – there was nothing to show that the application SETUPSG.exe was in fact running.

    8. When I then connected the scanner to the computer, it showed no sign of life. Control Panel/Devices and Printers showed the scanner icon, but with the all too familiar warning triangle label; clicking on this brought up the information that ‘The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)

    This is all very frustrating! Clearly, since other people have succeeded in running the Lide 50 with Win 8.1 64-bit, I am either doing something wrong; not doing something right; or a bit of both. But what? If you can see what’s amiss from my description, please let me into the secret!

    I appreciate all the advice and help listed on here. I am able to download the driver and unzip it. I see the files, however, when I attempt to install (clicking file name setupsg.exe), Windows attempts it and then gives me a small error message that simply states the file could not be installed. Then it closes. I’m completely at a loss as to what to try next. I’ve downloaded the driver from every different working link here on this conversation thread and none are able to install for me. I’m running Windows 7. Any help appreciated!!

    Windows gives the following message:
    Windows found driver software.
    The hash for the file is not present in the specified catalog file.
    The file is likely corrupt or the victim of tampering.
    As a result the driver is not installed.

    Is there a solution?

        Thank you so much for your advice.
        I disabled driver signature verification in Windows 8.1. After that, the LiDE 50 driver installed normally and after rebooting, Windows reports the device is working propertly.
        Next I installed CanoScan Toolbox 4.9 available on Canon’s website (cstbwin4932.exe). When scanning CanoScan Toolbox asks to “Select a source”. After selecting “CanoSacn LiDE 50 11.1 (32-32)” (the only option available after installing the driver), the following error message is shown: “Unable to select the TWAIN source”.
        Jeff Widmer’s blog (http://weblogs.asp.net/jeffwids/canon-scanner-unable-to-open-twain-source ) suggests to adapt the system environment variable PATH to include C:\windows\twain_32\xxxxx, where xxxxx is our driver. In our case this is CNQL60, the LiDE 60 driver, modified for use with the LiDE 50. Rebooted.
        Unfortunately, the CanoScan Toolbox still gives the error “Unable to select the TWAIN source”. I have no idea how to fix this.

          I can’t really give any advice on getting the Canon Toolbox to work as I never used it. Primarily once the driver is installed an image app like Paint.net will allow you to connect to the scanner & scan an image using the Acquire option in the file menu.

          However as I no longer have the LiDE 50 I can’t test anything with this any more. (Replaced it with a Epson Artisan 837 some time ago as the LiDE 50 had a mechanical failure)

            I tried to connect to the Canoscan LiDE 50 scanner using an image application.
            Using IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com), more specifically its Acquire function, the LiDE 50 scanner is working again (Windows 8.1 64bit) ! (The CanoScan Toolbox application is not required.)

            Thanks once more for advice and pointers! Your expert knowledge beats planned obsolescence.

    Many, many thanks for keeping my Canon LIDE 50 out of e-waste! This works great after re-booting and using with NAPS2 or Irfanview. The CanoScan Toolbox doesn’t recognize my scanner anymore, but not a problem with NAPS2 or Irfanview.

      Marvellous; it worked for me in W10 exactly as you described.
      Saves me a license for Vuescan (which is as much as a new scanner) as well.

        Sorry correction; I had major problems when trying further; “could not select Twain source” messages. After another day of trying ended up with a reasonable solution: NAPS2. Works simply but reliably.

          use vuescan, free version has a watermark, but is the only way to make lide 30 work that i found after hours of trying to search on internet

    Hi
    I have a Canon 3200f scanner that I was able to use on Windows 7. I recently upgraded to a new computer Windows 64 bit. Do you know of anyone who has got this scanner to work on Windows 10? Would the Lide driver you have created work? Canon has said it is not supported, Windows 10 does not recognise it as a scanner and Vuescan does not see it either. Thanks for your work.

    It works great with Windows 10 1607 64bit, in 2017.
    1. Download and unzip
    2. Do Shift+Reboot and turn OFF driver signing
    3. In Device Manager browse to unzipped directory

    Brilliant, I got my old LIDE 50 to work with WIN 10 64bit now.

    1. Download the modified drivers from this page and unpack the folder to your desktop.
    2. Disable Windows driver signing, follow option 2 at http://www.technipages.com/enable-disable-device-driver-signing and restart your PC
    3. Connect your LIDE 50 via USB and go to device manager.
    4. You should see a new device with a yellow exclamation mark on it now.
    5. Right click on the device and click browse my computer and then navigate to the folder you extract the files to on your Desktop
    6. Click next (check Include subfolders if it is not selected)
    7. Restart your computer and the LIDE 50 will be recognized now.
    8. Copy the TWAIN_32.DLL driver from the folder “DNA Canon LiDE50 x64 Driver\CNQSG111PATH” (Indside the downloaded package) to the path C:\windows\twain_32\ on your drive.
    9. The Canon ScanToolbox won’t recognize your LIDE 50 but NAPS2 (Not Another PDF Scanner 2) does and it works perfect for me.

    Works great for LIDE 50 on Windows 10-64bit.

    Is it just a matter of changing CNQL60.INF content? I have an N650U scanner model, which is very similar to LIDE 50 from an end user perspective. But maybe drivers are too far off from LIDE 60 ?
